Book Comment:Designing With Web Standards - Jeffrey Zeldman

"they stagger and stumble and soil themselves, bringing shame to their families and eventually losing their place in society" pg162

He's talking about how some browsers aren't aware of/haven't kept up with web standards - more specifically how some can't interpret XML prolog. (Why do they call it prolog when its at the beginning of the document?
)

Sometimes reading is hard, like when an author's voice is so annoying or opinions so strong you can't listen and think for yourself at the same time. Ugh - hate that. But this is honest straight forward - kinda like how to use glue.

Good book.

So, as fabulously pure as my intentions were,
this blog of mine wasn't done on time.

Thing #10: More with Flickr

Wow -

there's a lot of cool toys out there.

I think part of the challenge is learning how to use them while not being too picky about everything else being perfect. For example, right now, I wanted to put up an image from one of the 'bighugelabs' toys, but it didn't fit into the 'feel' of my blog. So, I know HOW to do it, but I don't know how to make it cohesive with the rest of my work just yet.

So, the other part of the challenge is finding who you are and what your design style will be or is. I look forward to finding it!!!

Random Note

I'm getting lost with all my usernames/passwords and what websites I like for what. Is there going to be a thing coming up to manage this???

Thing #9: Photosharing with Flickr

My favorite blog is http://www.veerle.duoh.com. I like it for a lot of reasons, one of which her integration of Flickr into her web page. She takes a lot of cool pictures and uploads her graphic design projects into her stash of photos.

One of the things I wonder about is how to differentiate and deal with the personal pictures; for example pictures of Makenna's first swimming lessons. Maybe that's the line in the sand between personal and professional? I dunno. Still trying to work the kinks of having a kid and a career.

Thing #8: Wikis

In Progress.

Thing 7: Online Collaboration Tools

I've fallen in love with Google Calendar.

I'm always online and when I'm online I'm always signed into my email at google. So, when an important new thing happens, I can immediately input it into my computer where it remains stored. No post-its everywhere or scribbled out dates on a paper calendar. Yay!

But, the best part of it is being able to share it with he-who-shall-not-be-named that is the co-parent of my three year old daughter. I used to have the worst time talking to him about scheduling. He'd be rattling off dates and I'd have no visual in front of me and blah blah blah.... but now, I've made a parenting schedule, we share it online and he emails me questions. The uncomfortable face to face time eliminated. GO TEAM ANNETTE!

Thing 6: Digg, Reddit …[et al]

I'm still sort of in a world where I have a lot of time. Granted, I have five jobs and a three year old daughter, but I still find myself at the computer wondering what I should do next. I try to keep focused on how to be a better developer/web thinker and these programs are definitely food for thought.

What I mean is that for some people, these programs are old news (no pun intended). They've been using them for a while and digg or reddit has become second nature and a natural part of their day. And then there are people who are still looking for jobs in the classified section of the newspaper.

There are just so many places to enter and so many people to serve and/or develop for. Although each new perspective is a bit overwhelming, they all make me smarter. But, as of yet, I won't be using a blog feed or reddit. But, its nice to know that when the need arises, these programs are here.

Thing #5: Beyone MyFaceSpaceBooking

I chose to go with the twittertizer. I like it because its new and it feels more related to my web world. I haven't had any friends from anywhere using this site, so its nice and quaintly web for right now.

I like that its just a sentence - some people are really funny in ten words or less. As a person who loves to "talk talk talk", its great to be forced into 140 characters or less. Sometimes I find I'm too complicated to succinctly explain and sometimes I find that I just make things complicated and its actually quite simple. Its good company, anyway.

Thing #4: Social Networking

I remember setting up my facebook & myspace last year. Suddenly it was like I had an interactive yearbook. Totally great to see some people's kids and unfortunate that certain people keep 'owning' me and giving me as a human gift. Ya take the good with the bad, I guess.

Social vs. Professional networking? Obviously, the intention of one is to have fun & interact and the other is to get a job or hire someone with the skills you need. But, I try to be as consistent as possible in the many facets of life - so I don't really differentiate much. If anyone has a different vangtage point to offer, I'd be interested, but for now I feel like I don't have anything creepy in my personal life and my professional life is fun... so they're pretty much the same. just me.

Thing #3: The OLS

Since today is registration day, I thought it particularly relevant to write about the OLS. I am a big fan of the online registration system because I totally hate waiting in line. You're not getting paid or having fun, so its totally wasted time. I wanted to help the people standing in line use the OLS system.

Just pop back and forth between your graduation report and the class schedule, keep a stickie of the times and numbers, pop 'em in and you're done. Horray for time saved! Now I get to take a nap. mmmm......

Thing #2: RSS

So, now I've done the RSS thing. I agree with a fellow 16 things blogger and I have thoughts of my own, too.

Google's RSS feels very "heavy". I don't think I would have said heavy on my own - that's 4 trains talkin' (http://4trainsacrossindia.blogspot.com/) - but its a great way to describe it. There's just something really wieghty about being there and I would imagine that filling it with your feeds makes the whole situation more claustrophobic (that's my word - didja like how I did that?)

My own thoughts are that I really like having my four favorite sites bookmarked and clicking through them. I like the way they all look in totality and I like seeing them. They make me happy and I would miss visiting them if I didn't go there everyday. Of course, as I continue to grow and the website number turns into a hundred rather than four, I'll probably be using an RSS feed.

Another note, I totally thought that RSS was for putting the updates on your own blog so that the updates you're interested in would be read by people that are interested in you. Of course, some people couldn't do that because re-saying what other people already said is what makes them interesting. But, those of us with massively populating opinions it would be nice to have the context of the thinking surrounding the blogging. Maybe my dislike comes from the disapointment of unrealized expectations. ...gotta hate that...

That's probably not all I could say about my RSS experience, but I'm going to cut myself off here because Brull gives out homework like the Jesuits give out Bibles. Don't get me wrong, I love it... I just have to go do it. See you in a social network!

Thing #1: A blog on my blog

I'm obsessed with this blog. I'm so stoked about this blog. I hate this blog - its taken over my online life. This is the third (and last) time I am editing this post.

First one was funny - laugh out loud, Annette in rare form - the way I talk when I'm overly excited. Then I decided that was too revealing. Then I posted more academically and I have now decided it is too boring and completely uninteresting, even to me. So, here I am again, in a final rendering of Thing #1: consider me a victim of scope creep and look foward to blog #2. (or not)
